At Almost 50yrs old, My Metabolic Age Is 35yrs.

I must say, I wasn’t aware that there was such a thing as Metabolic Age until I did a body (Boditrax Bioelectric Impedance Analysis) scan a couple of years ago and even then I didn’t pay much attention to what the scan said my metabolic age was. However, now that I am turning 50yrs this year, I’ve started paying more attention to my body composition and metabolism.

I’ve done the scan 3 times this year (March, April, May) and I was very happy to read in the results of my last scan that my metabolic age is 40yrs old. This is because after the first scan in March, I tidied up some of my bad habits with the aim to reduce my body fat %. This tidying up has shaved years off my age (read what I did below) and the results encourage me to keep doing what I’m doing. Though my focus is still on non essential body fat, I’ll happily take the younger body that comes with my efforts.

What is Metabolic Age?

Simply put, Metabolic Age is how old your body is health wise. You can have a body that is older or younger than your actual age. Your Metabolic age tells you about your overall fitness and metabolic activity. It tells you what age your body is functioning at and this is an indication of your overall health.

Some people age faster because they’ve let themselves go and some people age slower because they take care of their bodies. How you age directly affects your quality of life as you grow older.

Finding out your metabolic age will help you (if you take action) improve your health because it gives you an indication of your overall health. The calculations tell you how old your body is based on your body composition (fat, lean muscle, bone percentages) which gives more information about your health than just your weight.

If your results show that your metabolic age is older than your chronological age, you need to seriously look at your diet and exercising habits. If it shows the opposite, then you are on the right track.

Your Metabolic Age is calculated by comparing your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) against the average for your age. Your BMR is the amount of energy your body uses to process body functions like breathing, digesting food, brain activity etc. Simply put, BMR measures your body’s energy usage when it’s at rest – the minimum calories it needs to perform the processes it needs for the aforementioned processes. BMR is calculated using your height, current weight and age.

I decided to take reducing my body fat percentage more seriously after the scan I did in March. This is something I’ve been wanting to do for the last 2yrs. At the moment, I’m very focused but not obsessive.

All I’ve done is 2 things.

1) I’ve paid more attention to my body composition.

As we grow older we lose lean muscle mass. This slows our metabolism and as a result, we store more fat.

I’ve increased my strength training to build more lean muscle which is more metabolical active so I burn more calories. Some people think the heavier the weights they lift, the more they look like a body builder. Strength training and body building are two different things.  I strength train to build and maintain lean tissue and as you can see from my pictures, I don’t look like a body builder.

1) I’ve paid more attention to my diet.

To be more specific, I’m paying more attention to how much junk food I eat – the quality of my snacks and how often I eat snacks, deserts, and foods with high sugar content.

I’m being more focused about setting weekly goals with regards to junk. As mentioned in my previous blogs, I’m a sugar ant. I love cakes, chocolates, ice cream, pastries etc. Because I love sweet things, as I grow older, I have to pay more attention to how much of it I’m eating. At the moment, I’m giving myself 1 day each week to have some. I started this in April and I’ve been 90% successful with my targets so far. I’m happy to achieve a 80-90% success rate monthly.

I encourage you to do the same. Do a body scan, find out how old your body is and address any issues that may arise.
